The Mexican-American War
The United States had no choice but to go to war with Mexico to protect our border and national security. After the annexation of Texas, the Mexicans did not adhere to the border, Rio Grande, between America and Mexico. Polk tried to avoid the war and sent John Slidell as an envoy to settle matters but the Mexicans did not want to cooperate They not only ignored the boundary, but also shed American blood on American soil. With no options left, Polk was forced to declare war on Mexico. With an army of only 1,500, General Stephen Kearney gained control over Santa Fe, the New Mexico territory, and southern California. Meanwhile, Zachary Taylor, won a major victory at Buena Vista and General Winfield Scott captured Vera Cruz and Mexico City. Overall, the Mexican-American War was a success. While sending only a few men, we both secured our border and gained possession of California and New Mexico. It is clear that Polk made a wise choice by fighting against Mexico. The newly gained land will provide you and your family more opportunity for a brighter future.
