James Knox Polk
President James K. Polk began as an unknown democrat in the House of Representatives. In the House a representative from Tennessee’s 6th district from 1825-1833, a representative form Tennessee’s 9th district from 1833-1839, and he served as the Speaker of the House from 1835-1839. He also served as the governor of Tennessee from 1839-1841, when he befriended Andrew Jackson who served as president previously between the years of 1829 and 1837. In 1844, he was leading for nominations for Vice President until he imposed the idea to re-annex Texas and have all of Oregon re-occupied. Ex-President Andrew Jackson saw that a candidate who wanted expansion would be preferred be the people, which is what got Polk nominated on the ninth ballot. Polk proved to be a wise choice of the people when he prevented going into war with Great Britain about the territory of Oregon. While he tried his best to stay out of war, America was soon plunged into a war with Mexico during an attempt to come to common grounds about who would take the territories of California and New Mexico. A year prior to leaving office, after many victories for America, the war between Mexico and America ended with America gaining the two large pieces of land.
